my four year old is really smart

Conversation with another mother at the park recently.

We were both happily pushing our little boys on the swings when Lottie wanders over

other mum - Oh she wears glasses!
me - yes
other mum - WOW she must be really smart
me - (staring at her in blank disbelief)
other mum - You know, because of the glasses and all
me -ummm, she is long sighted, but she is pretty clever too
other mum - yeah, well I always just hoped my kids were average you know, like smart enough to get by but not smart enough to need glasses
me - Oh (trying to decide whether it is worth going to the effort to explain to this woman that the need for glasses and IQ are not related, but decide against it seeing as Lottie is standing at my feet looking as annoyed as me)

After the woman wanders off Lottie says - That lady doesnt know much does she mum.
me - well she was right about one thing, you are really smart.

I wouldn't bother explaining to her...she probably wasn't smart enough to understand.

Clever Lottie...and not a 4 yr old for much longer!

That is unbelievable! I can't believe people still think that way! My nephew wore glasses for a short time when he was 2 to correct a turned eye and we would say 'he looks really brainy' but we didn't actually mean that it had anything to do with the glasses!!! My hubby (who wears contacts now but glasses previously) is also in disbelief.

Wow I knew I wore glasses for a reason, nothing to do with being able to see just to make me brainier

Oh my goodness that's hysterical!!!! It sounds like a scene out of Zoolander or something :P If her theory is correct, then it sounds like she could have done with a pair of glasses herself (really really big thick ones by the sound of it):P.

Oh yes, that is the type of attitude I grew up with - way before glasses were a fashion statement!
I would have found it very difficult no tto comment to her, but as others have said, she probably wouldn't have understood anyway!

oh dear.......

the scary thing is that this was a mother who is probably teaching her own children all sorts of similar cock-a-mamy things.

That is hilarious! Hope her kids don't go to school with your kids...you wouldn't want it to rub off

My 9 year old is really "glasses wearing" smart too.

Smart 4 year old & not-so-smart lady in park with child.

Oh Brenda, I truly wish I had made it up. And as far as I could tell she was completely serious.

I have come across some odd people in my parenting years but this woman beats them all.

Tell Lottie she gave me my laugh of the day!
The saddest thing was that lady only wanted her kids to be "average"!
